Umatilla Group Home

Disturbing allegations of elder abuse have emerged from a group home in Umatilla, Florida, where the facility’s Director, Pedro Custodio, was arrested after allegedly assaulting a 77-year-old resident. According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and local reports, Custodio allegedly became angry with the woman for “talking excessively” and threw her to the ground, causing visible injuries (WESH2, WFTV9). The victim described a pattern of abuse, including a prior incident where Custodio shoved her during a shower for moving too slowly.

A staff member told investigators she had witnessed at least five separate episodes of Custodio yelling at, pushing, and throwing food at the victim. She said she feared for the woman’s safety. Even more troubling, Custodio was on active felony probation for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon at the time of the alleged incident. Despite his criminal history, he was reportedly overseeing care for vulnerable adults.

The alleged abuse occurred at a group home located at 38417 Jamestown Street, Umatilla, Florida, though the group home's legal name and licensure status remain unclear. Custodio was arrested on July 12, 2025, and charged with battery on a person 65 or older and violation of probation. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating whether additional residents may have suffered harm.

See Something? Say Something.

Many cases of abuse only come to light because someone had the courage to report what they saw or heard. Whether it’s a concerned staff member, family member, or neighbor, speaking up can protect not just one resident, but others who may be suffering in silence. Facilities must be investigated and held accountable when they betray the trust placed in them.
